Aircraft Ownership

Many people are surprised by how affordable owning your own aircraft can be. You can purchase the same types of aircraft that you would typically rent at an FBO or flight school for between $20,000 and $50,000. At the low end of that range would be a 2-seat trainer like a Cessna 150. At the higher end would be a 4-seat aircraft like a Cessna 172 or a Piper Cherokee. These prices are for second-hand aircraft.

The fuel and oil expenses per hour for this class of aircraft runs around $30 - $40/hour (assuming fuel around $4.00/gal). Therefore, if you fly around 100 hours per year, your per-hour expenses for the aircraft will be around $70 - $100, which is comparable to the rental rates. Aircraft tend to retain their resale value so when it comes time to resell, you can expect to recoup most of your investment in the aircraft.

The costs drop quite a bit if you are in a partnership with others where the fixed expenses are shared among the partners. For a typical training situation a partnership with 2 or more partners in one aircraft can work well. This type of partnership can reduce your per-hour costs well below rental rates and save considerable money for your flight training.

The great advantage to owning your own aircraft is that is much more available than a typical rental aircraft and you can arrange with your partners for taking the plane for extended flights once you have your license. Also, you will get to know your plane very well and can participate in some of the maintenance which will give you an edge when it comes time for your written and flight exams.
